Raising their Voices: St. John’s Status of Women Council and Breakwater Books Revive Woman’s Almanac

St. John’s, NL – The St. John’s Status of Women Council, in partnership with Breakwater Books, is re-launching A Woman’s Almanac: Voices from Newfoundland and Labrador. Like the original editions produced in the 1980s and 1990s, the 2017 Almanac will showcase some of the most influential, successful and talented women in our province. They will share their stories of the women who inspired them.

“The Almanac will continue to record the rich history of women in our province,” said Jenny Wright, Executive Director, St. John’s Status of Women Council. The almanac for many years was the cornerstone of women’s activism and storytelling. We are very excited to be re-launching it.”

Some contributors to the new edition include businesswoman Zita Cobb, musician Amelia Curran, outport historian Florence Button, and author Lisa Moore.

“Breakwater Books is so pleased to be working with the St. John’s Status of Women Council on this project,” said Rebecca Rose, President, Breakwater Books. “I, personally, learned about the leaders of the women’s movement in this province from the original Almanacs published in the 80s while selling them in the bookstore as a young girl. To now be a part of publishing a new edition is so exciting and there are many admirable women that could make a contribution, I suspect we may need to publish more than one volume.”

The Women’s Almanac was last published in 1994, leaving over 20 years of history and celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador women to be documented and appreciated.
The Almanac will be officially launched in the Fall but advance orders are now available from the Council and Breakwater. All royalties from the sales of the Almanac will be donated to the St. John’s Women’s Centre.
